About Albright-Bethune United Methodist Church

Albright-Bethune United Methodist Church in State College, Pennsylvania, carries a rich history rooted in intentional merger and reconciliation. Originally formed in 1915 as an Evangelical Church serving college students, the congregation evolved through several unions before St. John's United Methodist Church and Bethune Memorial—a predominantly African American congregation founded in 1985—came together in 1993. Named for Jacob Albright, a Pennsylvania German preacher, and Mary McLeod Bethune, an influential African American educator and civic leader, the church is dedicated to providing worship experiences that draw from the African American tradition while remaining open to worshipers of all cultures and ethnicities. Today, Albright-Bethune UMC serves its community through worship, service, and engagement in local ministry and mission work.
