About Morris Brown AME Church
Morris Brown African Methodist Episcopal Church, located at 13 Morris Street in Charleston, South Carolina, is a Christ-centered congregation with deep historical roots dating to 1866. The church was established by Reverend Richard Harvey Cain to serve the growing membership that had outgrown Emanuel AME Church, and it is named after Bishop Morris Brown, a pioneering AME leader and native Charlestonian. Throughout its history, Morris Brown has been actively engaged in both spiritual ministry and community justice work, including significant participation in the Civil Rights Movement and ongoing partnership in the Charleston Area Justice Ministry. Under the current leadership of Senior Pastor Reverend Dr. James Keeton, Jr., the congregation serves the spiritual, social, and economic needs of a diverse community through both in-person and virtual worship experiences. The church continues a legacy of faithful pastoral leadership and community outreach, including community partnerships and initiatives like the Lowcountry Blessing Box Project addressing food security.
