About Morris Street Baptist Church
Morris Street Baptist Church stands as a historic beacon in Charleston, South Carolina, with roots tracing back to May 9, 1865, when 73 freed and formerly enslaved African Americans organized the congregation under Father Jacob Legare's leadership. Now under the pastoral leadership of Reverend Doctor Caroles Shedrick Taylor, the church continues a legacy of spiritual growth and community service spanning nearly 160 years. The congregation maintains active ministries including a Food Bank that has served thousands of families since its resurrection in 2017, community outreach programs such as The Social Butterflies mentorship initiative, and partnerships with local educational institutions. The church building itself, reconstructed in 1969 after a devastating fire and continuously improved through renovations and accessibility upgrades, reflects the congregation's commitment to creating a welcoming space for worship and fellowship. Morris Street Baptist Church remains affiliated with major Baptist conventions and continues to be a cornerstone of spiritual life and community support in the Low Country.
