About St Mary's Orthodox Church
The Dormition of the Mother of God Orthodox Church, known as St. Mary's, is a historic parish founded in 1895 by immigrant coal miners from the Carpathian region of Eastern Europe and relocated to Bluefield, West Virginia in 2000. The church is distinguished by its pan-Orthodox character, welcoming members from nine different ethnic backgrounds who contribute diverse traditions of food, chant, and prayer while united in Orthodox faith. The parish is known for its warm, welcoming atmosphere and active community life, including a Ladies' Altar Society, annual ethnic food festivals, St. Nicholas Day celebrations, and outreach to local mission work. Under the pastoral care of Reverend Father Michael Foster, the parish worships according to the ancient traditions of Eastern Orthodoxy and gathers for fellowship and cultural sharing following the Divine Liturgy.
