About St Mary's Orthodox Church
St. Mary's Orthodox Church, formally known as The Dormition of the Mother of God Orthodox Christian Church, is a welcoming parish of the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese located in Bluefield, West Virginia. Founded in 1895 by immigrant coal miners from the Carpathian mountain region of Eastern Europe, the parish relocated to its current location in 2000 and has since grown to embrace Orthodox Christians from nine different ethnic backgrounds. The church is known for its warm, inclusive atmosphere and its celebration of Orthodox tradition through divine worship, community fellowship, and cultural expression. Following Sunday liturgy, parishioners gather for coffee hour, a meal of love featuring foods reflecting the diverse cultural heritages of the congregation. The parish actively serves the local community through support of the Union Mission and hosts annual events including a World Food Festival and St. Nicholas Day celebrations.
