About St. George Orthodox Church

St. George Orthodox Church in Cedar Rapids traces its roots to 1899, when Saint Raphael visited the Syrian immigrant community and celebrated the first Divine Liturgy. The parish was officially established in 1914 and became the first Orthodox parish in Iowa and one of the earliest west of the Mississippi River. Today, St. George serves its congregation through regular liturgical worship and maintains a strong commitment to education in the faith, community service, and the preservation of Orthodox tradition. The parish has invested significantly in its worship space, including a striking Byzantine-style church built in 1992 and a beautifully carved stone iconostasis completed in 2012. St. George actively supports charitable works both locally and internationally, distributing food boxes to families in need and partnering with regional Orthodox ministries.
