About Greek Orthodox Church
Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Charlottesville, Virginia has served the Orthodox community for over 75 years, with deep roots tracing back to early 1900s Greek settlers from Thessaly and Asia Minor. Formally established in 1944 and dedicated in 1954, the parish was built by community members who donated even the hand-painted icons from Mount Athos monks. Today under the leadership of Father Gabriel Hanley, the church welcomes Orthodox Christians from diverse backgrounds including Russian, Bulgarian, Ethiopian, Serbian, and Ukrainian traditions, along with students and visitors from the University of Virginia. The parish maintains active ministries including the Ladies Progressive Society, Daughters of Penelope, a church choir, and youth programs, fostering strong fellowship through Sunday services and community events held in the adjacent parish center.
